Client Success Story - Syracuse University

About Syracuse University
Syracuse University was established in 1870 as a private, coeducational institution offering programs in the modern languages and physical sciences. Today Syracuse University offers thirteen different academic units and strives to achieve their vision of becoming the nation's leading studentcentered research university.

Campus Card System

Syracuse University (SU) converted to the CBORD Odyssey PCS™ Campus-Wide card system in June of 2003 in an effort to manage all card operations in a more efficient, cost effective and streamlined approach. The principal reason for choosing CBORD was the aging POS terminals and continuing concerns about the service and support from their former system provider. With CBORD, Syracuse now has new POS terminals, faster transactions and an improved business relationship with their Campus Card System provider.

"The Odyssey PCS system has been much easier to manage and administer,"states Dave Kohr, Housing, Meal Plan, and ID Card Services Director for Syracuse University. "Newer equipment is more reliable (less down time) and we are provided an improved level of support and service."

The one-card system is used for residential dining, student centers, snack bars, retail and restaurant purchases, Carrier Dome concessions, copier centers, laundry, tickets for campus events and athletic competition, access to recreational facilities, the library system, residence halls and some academic buildings. Having the ability to combine all of the above applications to one card system across campus makes life that much easier for SU students.

SU has also implemented a balance inquiry function for cardholders, using the *JSA WebVTS system. With this mechanism enabled, students are able to view, in real-time, the total funds available in their account. The capabilities of WebVTS are also expandable to include secure credit card deposits, a 6 month history of transactions on the card, and an immediate notification that a card has been lost.

SU also uses their campus card system for all conferences and summer events, enabling facility access and dining transactions. Syracuse University has hosted summer events that issue cards for up to 6,200 guests at a time.

Future Plans

Syracuse's future plans include bringing 250 vending machines on-line over a 12 month period, and an integration of residence halls and campus-wide access system onto a *BEST™/Lenel platform, adding off-line card access for entry to individual residence hall rooms and apartments.

CBORD Configuration

Syracuse University's Odyssey PCS System includes, Micros 3700 terminals, Lyric card readers, Real-Time Interface Development Kit, Scales, Printers, Copier Readers and Vending Equipment.
